In 1993 almost eighty years after the outbreak of the First World War I began photographing survivors of the "war to end all wars".
Many of these men had taken part in the Somme Offensive of 1916, the largest battle of the war and had fought on opposite sides.
They all had clear memories of their time at the front and shared some of them with me. In most cases it had taken a lifetime for them to be able to recount their experiences.
